In my research on crochet hooks I came across a reference to Boye introducing a size 15 crochet hook in late 1924. About 5 years ago, I finally found one.
Then, yesterday I was sorting through some hooks I bought on eBay a couple of years ago. If I hadn't procrastinated so long, I would have discovered that buried with the hooks was another size 15 Boye hook. This one has markings indicating it was made after 1925.
In your search for hooks to add to your collection, see if you can find one of the rare Boye size 15 hooks.
Oh goodness, that is tiny!
ReplyDeleteI don't really do thread at all anyway, and there is absolutely no way I would be able to maneuver anything close to that.
Do you use it regularly?
I'm so glad I followed some links from Ravelry and found your blog. I have a collection of vintage hooks myself that I know very little about. Maybe you could offer some history? I've made a slideshow in Photobucket of the images: http://s254.photobucket.com/albums/hh101/msswitch/?action=view¤t=3937cd07.pbw Thanks! -Vanessa
ReplyDeleteI searched through my hooks this weekend and found a size 16 hook. Its smaller than the 15 hook mentioned in your post. Have you heard of this size before? Its extremely tiny!
ReplyDeleteI'v always liked to work small, so back in the 1970s or 80s when I found size 15s in a 5&10 store that was closing, I bought a couple. I'll probably rediscover them some day "Filed" away in an unfinished project.
ReplyDeleteI recently was handed down an old tin, cigar case filled will old hooks, from my grandmother and quite possibly my great-grandmother. I took a look and while there were no size 15's ... there were a couple of 13's and a 14!
ReplyDeleteI looked and have inherited a 14-- is that rare?
ReplyDeleteI have oldies from grandma and they go up to a 14. She taught me with that size, we made lace edgings for handies with it. I bent mine a few times when learning, was too impatient when the hook got snagged on the handy material. But I still have them, my bent one and grandma's nice one.
ReplyDeleteI miss the clips and caps that we always had on our steel hooks.
Not rare but getting there...I have noticed a few of the newer steel hooks are a combination of 2 sizes.
ReplyDeleteI thought a 14 was small. wow 15 must be micro.
